An anterior cruciate ligament injury is considered the over-stretching or tearing of the anterior cruciate ligament or ACL found within the knee. A tear of this sort may partially or completely affect the ACL. The anatomy of the knee is akin to a hinge joint. It is found in the area where the end of the thigh bone known medically as the femur connects with the top of the shin bone also known as the tibia.
